Maxims Subjective?
I think that some of the cooperative principle maxims are a little subjective. The one that I think is especially subjective is the maxim of quantity. For example, when I tell of an event that had happened I give a lot of detail so that my listener knows exactly what happened and can sometimes visualize what happened. many of my friends and family find this absolutely fine and many do it themselves. However, I do get the occasional person who says "What's the point?" or "Get to the point" like they are in a hurry to be somewhere and don't have the time to listen or they just think my details are irrelevant. So to the latter they believe I have flauted the maxim of quantity by saying more than is needed while the others think I gave a normal response.
What to you all think? Subjective or not? Does this sort of thing happen to you?

you're right--how much is too much or too little? i know some people who are quiet and you have to pry to get more information out of them and then there are some very outgoing people who can chat for hours often changing topics. i know in my case, at work i get caught in this a lot--some customers want to chat when i'm super busy and i have to be as polite as i can be to say "oh i gotta get back to work"--everyones different...you really just have to be good at reading people cues to you, and some are better than others at this!
